Color coordination for textiles

Published: 30/07/2024

We have gained a new reference who requested a service for color coordination for textiles – something that we can do but do not market as a service too much. The customer chooses to be anonymous, and we respect that.

The customer came to us when they had a proper mood board ready, and the key colors already chosen. This part of the work had been done internally in the company by people who are into product development and design. One could wonder what is the point of relying on an external designer at this late point, but with a quick glimpse of the material we found a place of improvement in the colors.

The fact is that too harmonious or tone-to-tone color palettes are very challenging to use, especially when designing individual patterns as well as patterned product collections. This challenge applies to designers and consumers. When the color palette consists of several colors very close to each other, they are hard to match in a pattern design without any of them looking flat, stuffy, or as the dyeing process would have been unsuccessful. On the other hand, consumers have challenges when choosing the best one for their interior, because it is challenging to make a difference between the color versions. This is especially true when the products are sold in a webshop, as each screen tends to repeat the colors in its own way.

So, we adjusted the colors so that there is more variety with the colors and they still go well with each other. We also made a guideline on how to use the colors for this specific purpose because it is not all the same which of the colors is the main color, complementary color, and detail color to create the wanted impression. You can see in the pictures an example of one of the customer’s color palettes and its reform. The work was done quickly with a very tight schedule, within the customer’s budget, and the outcome fulfilled the customer’s expectations. With the new palette, color coordination for textiles in customer’s upcoming projects becomes much easier and the outcome becomes more useful.
